Core concepts
Ember has a few main parts. Once you know these words, the whole app makes sense. Here is each one, and how they fit together.
Exercise
An exercise is one thing you practice. It is the smallest piece. A long tones drill is an exercise. A scale is an exercise. A lip slur is an exercise.
You can play an exercise on its own, or add it to a routine.
Routine
A routine is a set of exercises you play in order. Think of it as your warm-up or your daily workout. You press start, and Ember walks you through each exercise, one after the other.
Ember comes with ready-made routines. You can also build your own.
Lesson
A lesson teaches one skill, with notes and music to play. Lessons come from real method books that are free to share. A lesson is more guided than a plain exercise. It often has a short write-up that explains what to work on and why.
Song
A song is a full piece of music you play along with. Songs are for fun and for putting your skills to work. You can add your own songs too.
Plan
The plan is what to practice today. It is your home screen. Ember puts your routine, any lessons, and anything a teacher sent you into one list for the day. Most days, you open the plan and play down the list.
Goal
A goal is something you want to reach. “Practice 20 minutes a day.” “Play a high C.” “Warm up my tone.” You set a goal, and Ember shows how close you are as you practice.
How they fit together
Here is the simple version:
- An exercise is one drill.
- A routine is a group of exercises in order.
- A lesson teaches a skill, and a song is a piece to play.
- Your plan gathers what to do today (routines, lessons, and more).
- A goal is what you are working toward over time.
